SAVE YOUR SOIL DRIVEWAY THIS SUMMER

Most country homeowners who use dirt roads to drive to and from their homes, or brave muddy driveways to get back home at the end of the day, know that summer is often synonymous with ‘knee-deep mud bath where my driveway used to be’.

If you own a country home, then you probably agree that the rainy season usually becomes a literal mudslide that carries on straight to your front door every time it rains.

If you’re planning on filling up your driveway before all muddy Hell breaks loose, it’s best to make sure that you’re implementing the correct aggregate to solve the problem, rather than creating a bigger one. After all, according to some contractors, ‘adding a bucket of aggregate to a bucket of mud just gets you a bigger bucket of mud’.

Some of us have witnessed the overwhelming power that mud can have on our attempts to exhume our driveways from their muddy graves, but this doesn’t mean that it should be impossibly expensive to try.

If you’re on the fence about using aggregate to save your driveway from past disappointments, it doesn’t mean that gravel and other aggregate isn’t an easy and effective solution. It simply means that your muddy driveway needs more aggregate to become a solid road, rather than of something like the final scene from ‘The Perfect Storm’.

Many types of aggregate have been employed to try and improve this situation in the past and, through brave attempts of trial and error, the general consensus is that using gravel is your most cost-effective, low maintenance choice.

So, why gravel? Because this aggregate is quite porous, it leaves enough room for existing loose soil to actually reinforce your driveway, instead of ruining it.  Course gravel leaves enough space between stones to allow loose soil to firmly settle in these spaces, adding a structure to the muddy mess you’re trying to get rid of. It’s important to note that using enough aggregate is essential in creating this structure, whereas using too little might simply have no effect.

If you’re trying to get rid of the sticky situation you’ve got to deal with to get in and out of your home quickly and easily on rainy days, implementing aggregate to reinforce your driveway could be your salvation!
